Lead Signs, Lead House Plaques - The Process

Period Signs purchases only the best lead in refined ingots. All the lead we use is recycled and 99.9% pure. The high purity is important for environmental reasons and reflects on the quality of the finished product.

The first part of the process for our craftsmen is making the patterns which are generally constructed from wood as it helps to give a high-quality finish and is very hardwearing. The pattern is then compacted into sand inside a mould. Great care is taken here to ensure all the letters and numbers are perfectly in line.

The ingots are heated to a temperature of just below 400°C and the molten lead is poured carefully into the mould.

After a short cooling period the sign is removed, cleaned off and a unique fluid process is applied to give the product an original, aged look.

Finally we paint the top surface of the letters with enamel paint in a choice of gold, copper, white or black.

All our products are made using this centuries-old practice so every item is slightly different making every sign, planter or statue unique.
